One Palm Raised, One Open

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned Buddha sits in full lotus on a lotus throne set over a plain hexagonal plinth. Beneath the snail-curl hair the eyes are lowered in a smile; the right palm stands raised at the chest, facing outward in the gesture of reassurance, while the left hand reaches over the left knee and opens upward, fingers relaxed and empty, as if waiting for something to be placed in it. The robe falls diagonally from the left shoulder in clean folds, and the golden-copper surface has a bright, mellow lustre. One hand raised, one hand open — giving and receiving in a single figure, and an unusually open, welcoming expression. Suited to a shrine or a quiet corner at home, and best placed where the light is good, so the raised palm meets the visitor's eye first.
