Thought Beneath the Round Halo

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This fully golden four-armed bodhisattva sits on a lotus throne of many layered petals, a great round disc of gold behind like a full moon. Crowned and laden with beaded ornaments, the figure gives each of its four arms its own task: one hand cups the cheek in thought, one rises high holding a small dharma wheel on a stem, one cradles a round wheel-jewel at the belly, and one rests by the knee with prayer beads looped at the wrist. Below the throne, a waisted stand meets a hexagonal base carved all over with scrolling foliage, keeping the splendour well-ordered. For all its gold, the piece is not loud; its calm comes from the pose — the thinking hand quietens the whole hall of gold. Suited to the principal place in a shrine, or as the one substantial presence that anchors a room.
