The Pipa Guardian

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned guardian sits in full armour with a great pipa cradled in his arms — and nothing gentle in his face. Beneath an ornate crown his brows are knotted and his gaze drives downward; scale armour covers chest, shoulders, arms and legs, a skirt of plates falls at his waist, and the body of the lute is carved with a coiling dragon at its centre. Two teal-green ribbons stream and loop behind him, lending wind to all that weight of armour. On the rock at his feet, two small demons — one prostrate, one crouching aside — have fallen silent under his boots. Music and menace in a single seated figure. A commanding presence for a hall or entrance where a space needs holding, or enshrined as part of a guardian set.
