Dragons Around the Halo

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This golden-toned Buddha sits in full lotus, both hands folded in his lap in meditation, eyes lowered and expression turned inward. Robes fall from both shoulders and spread over the knees in unhurried arcs; beneath him, two tiers of full lotus petals rest on a tall altar base carved with a dharma wheel and scrolling lotus, its stepped sides drawing the whole composition calmly downward. The glory of the piece is the great circular aureole behind him, carved edge to edge with clouds and coiling dragons, a dragon's head gazing down from the very top — movement all around a still centre. The gold is warm rather than bright, and all the dense carving is gathered inside that single round of light. Made to be enshrined at the centre of a shrine, or to hold the principal position in a room: presence from afar, detail up close.
